Our Story

Barcelona Wines, Barcelona Deli and Iberian Foods are owned and operated by the Farràs family. All share a keen business acumen and love for fine Spanish food and wines.

Joan Farràs arrived in New Zealand in the 1970s from Catalonia, Spain. His yearning for the ancient foods of the Iberian Peninsula was able to be realised when trade regulations with the EU changed in 2004 and the importation of cured meats was made possible overnight. This led him to establish the wholesale company Iberian Foods. Iberian Foods has supplied Spanish delicacies to New Zealand’s top restaurants and bars since 2004.

As Iberian Foods continued to grow, it was hard to ignore the ongoing demand from private individuals for direct access to some of the fine products that were available wholesale through Iberian Foods. Therefore in 2019 and with help from his wife Vivien, daughter Amèlia and son Arnau, Joan established Barcelona Deli, an online store for fine Spanish Foods.

The Farràs family has it’s roots in the Pla de Bages region of Catalonia, under the shadow of the sacred Montserrat, where the Farràs family had grown grapes for centuries. So, the next step for the family, was to offer New Zealanders wines to match the beautiful food made available through Barcelona Deli. Barcelona Wines was created in 2021 to complement Barcelona Deli, making a truly Spanish eating and dining experience possible.  You can get some of their imported food products at www.bacelonadeli.co.nz  

Our producers and winemakers are all family businesses that strongly connect with our Spanish Kiwi family here in New Zealand. The Farràs family are passionate about bringing ancient Mediterranean foods to New Zealanders and today also look for local New Zealand produced complimentary products.
